an escape... sort of

shortly after jonah was born, there was a moment that i was in the bathroom and decided to stay a couple extra minutes to be by myself and sort of get away for a moment. i thought to myself, "so being a mom means that my relaxing time is in the bathroom. this will be something to get used to." but is it really that odd? the bathroom is the one place that you are allowed total privacy. since then, i've continued to steal a couple extra minutes here and there once i've finished what i need to do.

a couple nights ago, i confessed to matt that i sometimes stay in the bathroom a little while longer just to take a break. guess what. he does the same thing! then i started thinking about it, and to be honest, i've always done that. this isn't some new mom-found activity. ever since i was a little girl i'd be in the bathroom for long periods of time, just reading shampoo bottle ingredients, face wash directions, anything i could reach. if i was in the middle of a book, you better hope you didn't need to use it soon, because i was always going to finish the chapter first! and once i started reading magazines, my "library" expanded even more. after all, soap containers all say the same thing; they all have the same ingredients; it gets old after a while. at one point i even started taking a radio in there with me! haha!

once i realized that this was, in fact, an old beloved habit of mine from my childhood, it made me feel warm and fuzzy inside. that may sound weird, so let me explain... there are so many different ways your life changes when you have a baby. (and trust me. you can't possibly know how earth shattering it is until you've gone through it yourself.) to have a positive childhood activity to revert back to for comfort is, well, comforting. i can't sit around eating comfort foods anytime i want. i can't go crawl in my mom's arms. but i can sit in the bathroom and read shampoo bottles.
