three weeks old

oh boy. what a ride it's been! i know i have updated once since jonah was born, but let me give you a little insight into what it's been like around here since we got home from the hospital.

the first week was great. we were EXHAUSTED but really a lot of hilarious stories came out of that exhaustion. i would fall asleep in the middle of my sentences quite often and matt would wake up looking for jonah in our sheets because he dreamed we put him in our bed. that first saturday we were home, matt's brother joey and his girlfriend jessica brought us some bagels and when joey called matt to ask about coffee, matt told him he'd need to tell them my birthday so i didn't have an overdose. (what?? haha! he was asleep.) once i woke up to matt walking into the living room while cradling his pillows. when i asked him what he was doing he said he was taking jonah to his bed and when i said, "matt, you're asleep," he said, "YOU'RE asleep." lol.

then saturday came and the exhaustion started to not be so funny. i started to have no appetite and i got really emotional. i also started to not be able to sleep at all. at first i thought it was the baby blues until sunday was even worse, except i started to feel nauseous. then sunday night i just started having some bad feelings and thoughts so i called my doctor's office immediately when i woke up on monday. verdict: postpartum depression. the doctor gave me some medicine, but he said it might take a week to kick in. then monday afternoon after i left the doctor's office i started to get really sick, so i ended up calling in reinforcements: grandparents. matt's parents took jonah for the night so we could try to get some sleep. matt slept while i tossed and turned. tuesday, though, was the worst day for it all. i started having anxiety on top of everything else going on. but wednesday got a little better, and thursday was a little better and i had a little bit of an appetite. friday i actually felt good enough for matt, jonah, and i to go out to lunch and walk around a nearby outdoor mall. (well, we went to one store before i pooped out since that was the most i had done in a couple of months.) saturday was even better. sunday was even better. we got to go to church and we went to the in-laws before having to leave from, again, getting tired. but you know what? i can deal with being tired. that other bull crap, the sickness, the depression... i couldn't have waited a couple of weeks to see if it passed. i'm so glad i went in to the doctor and got help. but everyone around us was so great too. we had a lot of very supportive friends and family that just surrounded us during that horrible time and we are so grateful.

and today matt goes back to work. i think i've been too tired to get emotional about it, but i know jonah and i will be fine. and actually we are going to have visitors every day this week so that should be fun! i'm excited about getting into even more of a routine. i mean we had a good one going while matt was home, but jonah and i need our own while matt's at work.

oh and i'll just say that jonah is great. he's a good baby and we love him so much. he's so stinkin' cute and we can't get enough of kissing those cheeks!!

Jonah is so adorable! I can see why you can't get enough of those cheeks! I told Dusty the stories about Matt and he thought they were hilarious. Most of my delusions are simply dreaming that I am feeding her only to wake to her crying to be fed. Poor thing - sometimes it takes me a while to realize that I haven't just finished feeding her.
Glad that you are feeling better and that you have so much support. Hope the first day with Matt gone went well. Dusty is going out of town this weekend - it should be interesting!
